Septic Drain Fields Explained

After the wastewater from your home flows through drains or toilets, it goes into the septic tank. Chambers inside the tank separate the fats, solids, and liquids. All the fat floats to the top of the main tank, where it congeals. The solids sink to the bottom and are digested by bacteria. The remaining liquid flows into the drain field, which is a grid of perforated pipes. Tiny holes in the pipes allow liquid to seep into the dirt below, where it’s naturally filtered before harmlessly returning to the groundwater.

Septic drain fields are known by many names, including:

  • Absorption beds
  • Disposal fields
  • Drain fields
  • Leach fields
  • Seepage fields
  • Weeping tiles

Whatever you prefer to call it, you need it to work the right way. Let us help with your septic drain field service and cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’re answering the most frequently asked questions about our septic drain field service and cleaning. If you have more questions, please give us a call!

  • In some cases, yes. Mr. Rooter Plumbing performs all septic leach field repairs, including:

    • Clogged Drain Field Repairs: We accomplish this by digging up the affected pipe and cleaning out the accumulated dirt and solids. You can prevent this problem by only flushing toilet paper and human waste. Also, have your septic tank pumped every few years.
    • Root Removal: Drain field lines can become clogged by tree roots. Mr. Rooter Plumbing uses specialized equipment to remove tree roots from all kinds of pipes, including drain fields. To prevent this issue, don’t plant trees near the drain field.
    • Partial Replacement: Collapsed drain field pipe sections can be replaced. Protect pipes from collapse by keeping heavy objects (like vehicles and above-ground pools) off the drain field lines.

Full septic drain field replacement is the best option when multiple collapsed lines or constant clogs are causing ongoing issues. A full drain field replacement will also help the whole septic system operate more efficiently and prevent leach field clogs for years to come.
